Bayou Segnette State Park Reviews

From peaceful mornings on the water to fun-filled days with family, our guests come away with memories that last a lifetime. Here are a few of their stories:

I brought my family to Bayou Segnette for a long Memorial Day weekend, and we couldn’t have asked for a better trip. The wave pool was hands-down the highlight for my two kids—ages 7 and 10—who spent hours splashing, laughing, and riding the waves while I grilled burgers under one of the nearby pavilions. It had such a friendly atmosphere—families chatting, kids making fast friends, and lifeguards who were actually attentive and helpful. We camped in one of the improved sites, and I really appreciated how clean and well-maintained everything was, from the fire ring to the picnic tables and even the free laundry station, which was a lifesaver after a muddy hike. Speaking of hiking, the nature trails were an unexpected surprise. Even my kids enjoyed spotting animals along the way, like turtles, frogs, and a group of ibis that were nesting nearby. The elevated boardwalks made it easy to explore without getting our shoes soaked, and the views were absolutely stunning, especially early in the morning. My wife and I took turns biking the paved loop trail just after sunrise, and the peace and quiet in that golden hour was unlike anything back home. What really impressed me, though, was how close this park is to New Orleans—it’s like entering a whole new world just a short drive from the city. Between the friendly staff, the excellent amenities, and the safe, family-friendly setup, Bayou Segnette now has a permanent spot on our list of yearly trips. It’s rare to find a place that checks all the boxes like this.

As a lifelong Louisiana resident, I’ve visited many state parks, but nothing compares to my weekend getaway at Bayou Segnette. I stayed in one of the floating cabins, and it was absolutely magical—watching the sunrise from the screened porch with a hot cup of coffee in hand was something I’ll never forget. The way the cabin gently moved with the tide made it feel like I was drifting into peace itself. My husband and I spent our days fishing right off the back deck and caught several nice-sized catfish without even needing to launch a boat. At one point, he reeled in a redfish that put up a real fight—he was grinning like a kid afterward. The cabin was well-designed and spotless, and I was surprised at how modern and sturdy it felt, built to handle both weather and wear. It stayed cool and comfortable even in the afternoon heat. In the afternoons, we explored the nature trails, which were beautifully maintained and elevated above the marsh. The boardwalks took us deep into the heart of the bayou, and we were amazed at the wildlife—turtles, frogs, herons, and even a small alligator sunbathing off the trail. One evening, we sat quietly on a bench near the marsh and watched the sun set through the moss-draped cypress trees, and I honestly felt more relaxed than I had in years. It’s the kind of place that slows time down in the best way. We even saw a family of raccoons near the playground, which would’ve delighted our grandkids—we’ll definitely be bringing them next time. It was an incredible, recharging experience just minutes from the city, and I’ve already recommended Bayou Segnette to my fellow teachers and friends.

Bayou Segnette is a hidden gem for anyone passionate about nature and photography. I came out solo for a midweek stay in early spring, specifically hoping to photograph wading birds and marshland wildlife, and this park did not disappoint. I booked one of the floating cabins, which gave me both privacy and an ideal vantage point over the water. Each morning, I set up my tripod right on the screened porch to capture the soft morning light reflecting off the bayou, with egrets and ibises drifting through the mist. The cabin itself was perfect—modern, quiet, and equipped with everything I needed, plus the unique experience of gently rocking with the tide made me feel completely immersed in nature. During my stay, I hiked every trail and spent hours on the boardwalks scanning the trees and marshes. I was rewarded with sightings of eastern bluebirds, herons, and a pair of bald eagles that nested nearby. I even saw a mink darting through the reeds—something I’d never caught on camera before. The park was surprisingly uncrowded midweek, which allowed me to take my time without distractions. One of the highlights was an impromptu conversation with a park ranger who pointed me toward a less-traveled path where I spotted a group of glossy ibis feeding at sunset. In the evenings, I relaxed with a cup of tea, reviewing my photos as the sky turned from gold to indigo, with frogs singing in the distance and stars slowly emerging overhead. For any serious nature lover, this park is a dream location—close enough to New Orleans for convenience but remote enough to feel like a true escape. I plan to return in the fall to capture the seasonal changes, and I’ve already encouraged several friends in my photography circle to plan a trip here.
